Enterprise agents need a new systems mindset
Most enterprise agent systems are just REST APIs wearing agent costumes.
They look agentic from the outside. Underneath, they still think like request-response software.
I felt this uncomfortably in my own work.
At one point, a leader showed me a simple vision: set the problem and let agents solve it by reusing other agents.
My first reaction was defensive. We already had agents, orchestration, tools, and multi-step workflows.
But after sitting with it, I realized he was right.
We were not really building agent systems. We were building REST-shaped facades around agent workflows.
That distinction matters.
If your system is still designed around fixed endpoints, static ownership, and hand-wired orchestration, it can work for narrow demos.
It starts to break when agents need to discover capabilities, delegate work, pause, resume later, operate under budgets, or act under changing permissions.
The hard part is no longer just model quality. It is the surrounding system: → discoverability → runtime orchestration → budget control → identity and authorization
That is why I think enterprise agents need a different systems mindset.
Less “microservices with better prompts.” More “dynamic teams assembled around a problem.”
